Happy World Ocean Day!

Happy Birthday, Eugenie Clark!

It's the birthday of shark scientist Eugenie Clark.  She would have turned 96 today and according to biographer, Heather Lang, she probably would have still been scuba diving.

Eugenie was a force of nature and Lang spent time with her when writing her picture book biography, SWIMMING WITH SHARKS.  Lang even tried scuba diving during her research.

I HEART Sharks!

I happen to like sharks. Sorry, President Trump, I don't believe they should all die. And for that reason, I'd like to share a new, favorite book about sharks with you all -- SMART ABOUT SHARKS, by Owen Davey.

Not only does this book have a fun, retro-styled cover, it is wonderful to hold. It's cloth over cardboard, like many vintage titles. That's where the old-style nonfiction style ends.

Turn the pages and you'll see what I mean.

The text is kid-friendly, fun, and informative -- exactly what we love in current nonfiction titles. 

Check out this page all about shark teeth. It's so much fun that I wish I had written it myself.

Most of us know how important sharks are to our ocean ecosystem. This book reiterates that and goes above and beyond telling us how amazing they are as well.

Perhaps we need to get a copy off to the White House?

Did You Wear Lipstick? : Sylvia Earle, Books, and the Ocean

My daughter, an artist, just completed a piece inspired by Sylvia Earle's groundbreaking ocean research and the gender bias she received upon her return from below the sea.

Sylvia Earle lead the first team of woman aquanauts in 1970."I took pleasure in turning questions such as 'Did you wear lipstick? Did you use a hairdryer?' into a discourse on the importance of the ocean as our primary source of oxygen," said Sylvia in an essay for the National Journal of Literature and Discussion. 

Young readers can learn more about Sylvia Earle's ocean exploration in Life in the Ocean: The Story of Oceanographer Sylvia Earle by Claire A. Nivola. 

Sylvia Earle is not the only female ocean explorer. There are many others to inspire young readers.
