In November 2023, I wrote a post titled Good News and Bad News --For Wolves. You can find the original post here.  That post focused on the news that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had reinstated federal protections for gray wolves, however only in 45 states. Wolves in the Northern Rockies were still at risk.

Sadly, wolves made the news again this week. The House passed the "Pet and Livestock Protection Act," a thinly veiled assault on wolves. This dangerous bill is designed to strip Gray Wolves of Endangered Species Act protections and block judicial review.  It now moves to the Senate.

I wrote about the ping-ponging of federal protections for wolves in BACK FROM THE BRINK. The book focused on Endangered Species Act success stories. While wolf recovery can be seen as a success, ongoing legislation changes continue to threaten native wolf populations.

I wrote again about wolves again in THE WOLVES AND MOOSE OF ISLE ROYALE

Wolves are essential to their ecosystems. We can see this first hand in Yellowstone National Park and Isle Royale National Park. We need predators to help our entire environment thrive. We've been lucky to have an Endangered Species Act that requires recovery plans for threatened wildlife, but these protections are as endangered as some of the species on the list. Without protections we will continue to lose biodiversity. It is not only a loss for us, but for future generations.

But it isn't too late to act. Contact your Senators to keep national Endangered Species protections alive and strong. For more about wolves
